A tragic domestic dispute in Delta State has left a 34-year-old man dead after his 21-year-old partner, identified as Lilian, stabbed him during a heated quarrel.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday through its spokesperson, Bright Edafe, who revealed that Lilian had been living with the deceased since she was 17. The couple shared two young children together.
How the fight turned fatal
According to police reports, Lilian admitted during interrogation that the fight began when her partner attempted to end their relationship. She claimed he attacked her first, beating her with a cane and smashing her head on the ground.
In her statement, she said she ran into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and stabbed him in the chest when he advanced towards her, despite her warning him to stay back.
“I have been living with him for four years and we have two boys together. On Monday, he started ignoring me. When I asked him to collect the electricity meter from our neighbour so we could recharge, he refused. We argued, and he began beating me with a cane. He later smashed my head on the ground, so I rushed to get a knife. I am not happy that he is dead,” she said tearfully.
Police reaction
Edafe confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and will be charged with murder. He urged Nigerians to learn to control their temper and seek peaceful resolutions to avoid tragic outcomes.
The heartbreaking incident has since sparked discussions online about domestic violence, toxic relationships, and the need for better support systems for young women and families.
