Renowned Nigerian author and feminist advocate, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has urged young women to be intentional and discerning when choosing a life partner, cautioning against marrying out of desperation or societal expectations.
Speaking at a recent student event, the 47-year-old award-winning writer emphasized the long-term impact that marriage can have on a woman’s life, urging them to prioritize character, emotional support, and mutual respect when considering a partner.
“It’s really important who you choose,” Adichie said. “Young women, choose wisely. Sometimes you already know the person you’re with isn’t right for you, but because of pressure to settle down, you stay. Don’t settle.”
She continued, “The person you choose as your life partner will significantly shape your life. If you choose someone kind and supportive, it makes all the difference. I can say I chose well — there are still good men out there.”
Globally recognized for literary works such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, Adichie has been married to Nigerian-American medical doctor Ivara Esege since 2009. The couple shares three children — a daughter and twin boys.
Her remarks come shortly after she spoke about reclaiming her cultural identity by reembracing her Igbo name, “Chimamanda,” a move she described as a powerful reconnection with her roots after years of feeling distanced from her heritage.
Adichie’s message resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing her long-standing commitment to empowering women and advocating for self-awareness, cultural pride, and personal agency.
