The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi to formally resign from the party, following his recent alignment with the emerging opposition coalition.

In a statement released on Thursday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the group made clear its opposition to the coalition, describing its members as “power-hungry politicians” driven by self-interest rather than national development.

“Labour Party has consistently maintained it is not part of the coalition,” Ifoh stated. “Any of our members associating with it must resign within 48 hours.”

The party dismissed the coalition as a gathering of “recycled and frustrated politicians” who bear responsibility for Nigeria’s past governance failures. According to Ifoh, the coalition cannot deliver the oft-repeated vision of a “New Nigeria,” which he says can only be achieved through authentic grassroots movements like the Labour Party.

“Nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population are youths,” Ifoh noted. “They are tired of the old order and deserve a fresh direction—not another cycle of opportunistic politics.”

He accused Obi of holding “nocturnal meetings” to persuade Labour Party members to defect and join the coalition, but claimed many had rejected the move.

“The Labour Party will not tolerate dual loyalty. We are not available for individuals who claim LP by day and coalition by night. The party is not a shelter for deceptive political actors,” Ifoh declared.

He reaffirmed the LP’s commitment to offering a credible alternative to Nigeria’s political establishment and called on loyal members to stay united and preserve the party structure ahead of future elections.

“The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party, and we are prepared to lead Nigerians on that path,” he concluded.
