In a deeply tragic development, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has reportedly died following a car accident in Spain, just two weeks after marrying his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, the 28-year-old footballer was traveling with his brother, André Jota, when their vehicle veered off the A-52 motorway in the Zamora province. Initial police reports confirm there were no other vehicles involved, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.
Jota’s untimely death comes as a shock to the football world, especially following his recent wedding in Porto and a triumphant season in which he helped Liverpool win the Premier League under new manager Arne Slot.
Since joining Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, Jota made 182 appearances for the club, scoring crucial goals and helping secure multiple titles, including:
