Tension as APC National Chairman Ganduje Reportedly Resigns Amid Party Crisis

Tension is mounting within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following reports that the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has tendered his resignation. According to Igbere TV, the resignation reportedly occurred on Friday, amid growing internal pressure and widespread dissatisfaction over his leadership style.

Mounting Internal Pressure
Dr. Ganduje, who assumed office in August 2023 following the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu, has faced consistent calls to step down—particularly from stakeholders in the North Central zone, who have demanded that the chairmanship return to their region.

Sources within the party suggest that the tipping point came during the APC primary elections for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils, specifically in Bwari Area Council. The conduct of the primaries was described by insiders as “an embarrassment” to the party.

One insider stated:

“The situation in Bwari was disgraceful. Security operatives were reportedly used to chase away other aspirants, leaving only Hon. Joshua Musa Ishaku, who allegedly has ties to the PDP and did not back President Tinubu during the 2023 APC primaries.”

Leadership Under Fire
Dr. Ganduje’s leadership has been increasingly criticised as authoritarian, with party factions accusing him of sidelining internal democratic processes and failing to unite the party base. His administration has reportedly struggled with internal crises, further fueling dissatisfaction among party members.

Reorganisation Ahead of 2027 Elections
Sources within the APC National Working Committee (NWC) indicate that Ganduje’s reported resignation is part of a broader effort to stabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. As part of the interim arrangements, one of the party’s current national vice chairmen is expected to assume the role of acting chairman until a new national chairman is formally elected at the APC National Convention slated for December 2025.

Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, has not yet issued a formal statement on the matter. However, if confirmed, his exit would mark a significant reshuffling of the APC’s leadership structure and could signal a strategic realignment ahead of the next electoral cycle.

What Lies Ahead for the APC?
The reported resignation has sparked renewed debate over zonal representation and leadership equity within the ruling party. The North Central region, in particular, is expected to intensify its push for the chairmanship position as the party navigates this transitional period.

As the APC works to restore internal cohesion and refocus on upcoming political challenges, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this leadership shake-up strengthens the party—or deepens existing divisions.
