Pastor Mrs. Folu Adeboye, fondly known as Mummy GO and the wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has shared a shocking account of betrayal by one of the church’s pastors.
Speaking to a congregation during a recent service, Mummy GO recounted how a pastor, who was in charge of a church branch in Cape Coast, South Africa, absconded with $8,000 (approximately ₦12.2 million at today’s exchange rate) that was meant to support the ministry.
Pastor proposed buying a bus, but disappeared with the funds
In a viral TikTok video reposted by @gospeljett, Mummy GO explained that during her visit to the branch, she noticed the congregation had no permanent place of worship and were gathering inside an eatery. The disruption of a service by the eatery’s owner, who asked them to leave once their allotted time expired, moved her to find a solution.
She recounted asking the pastor what could be done, and he suggested purchasing a second-hand bus to generate income through tourism, with the proceeds used to secure a worship venue.
Touched by the idea, Mummy GO personally provided the pastor with $8,000. Unfortunately, instead of using the funds to buy the bus, the pastor fled South Africa, abandoned his wife—who is now reportedly struggling with her mental health—and relocated to the United States, where he remarried.
“I gave him the money to buy the bus. Do you know the man took the money, went to America, left his wife in Cape Coast till today… He got to America and married another wife,” she said during her testimony.
Reactions spark debate on church leadership
The incident has sparked conversations on social media about accountability within church leadership and the challenges of rapid church expansion.
Some of the comments include:
@Bamidele Adebajo: “The church expansion strategy should be reviewed. Many people who shouldn’t be at the altar are there just because of church growth.”
@The Amazing Judith: “People really don’t fear God anymore. Anything involving church money, my hand is not there.”
@Daniel Babafemi Theophilous: “When churches expand too quickly and forcefully, things like this happen.”
Pastor Adeboye’s viral testimony about spiritual challenge
In a related viral story, Pastor Enoch Adeboye shared an encounter with a married woman who claimed God told her he should become her husband. The situation escalated until Pastor Adeboye prayed about it, and the woman later died in London.
Church calls for accountability
The story has renewed discussions about the need for stronger vetting, accountability, and oversight within church leadership to prevent similar scandals that could damage the credibility of ministries.
