Nigerian Afrobeats icon, David Adeleke—popularly known as Davido—has been officially inducted as a voting member of the Recording Academy, the organization behind the prestigious GRAMMY Awards.
This milestone marks a significant step not only in Davido’s career but also in the global recognition of African music. As a voting member, Davido will now participate in the nomination and final voting processes for the 2026 GRAMMY Awards, granting him direct influence over the selection of winners in the world’s most esteemed music awards.
The Recording Academy announced the news via Instagram on Tuesday, sharing a promotional video featuring Davido alongside other new members, including Offset, Ravyn Lenae, Jessie Reyez, and Stewart Copeland.
“Creating a song or an album takes heart, time, and dedication,” the post read.
“That’s why Recording Academy members including @Davido… are sharing why your participation matters. Voting for the 2026 #GRAMMYs opens in less than 2 weeks!”
Voting for the 2026 GRAMMYs officially opens on October 3, during which members will review, listen, and cast their votes.
Davido Reacts to the Honor
In response to his induction, Davido expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to be part of the Recording Academy’s voting body.
“Understanding the importance of how our voices are heard, I am participating in the GRAMMY Award process.
It’s a game-changer,” he said.
“I have learned that voting empowers you to have a say in what is considered and recognized. I’m honored to be part of this community, and I look forward to voting.”
This development comes on the heels of Davido’s three GRAMMY nominations in 2024, and it signals the beginning of a new chapter—both for the artist and for the global spotlight on African music.
A Win for Afrobeats and African Representation
Davido’s membership aligns with the Recording Academy’s ongoing efforts to diversify its voting body and expand representation beyond the United States. It also affirms the growing influence of Afrobeats on the global music scene.
In recent years, African artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, and Ayra Starr have made notable appearances at the GRAMMYs, reflecting the genre’s explosive global appeal.
With his new role, Davido joins a select group of international music professionals tasked with shaping the future of global music recognition—cementing his place not just as a hitmaker, but as a cultural ambassador for African music.
