In a major political development, a coalition of prominent Nigerian political figures—led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai—has submitted an official request to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The application, dated June 19, was acknowledged by INEC on Friday, marking the formal beginning of what insiders describe as a calculated move to restructure Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADA, backed by key political heavyweights including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Umar Ardo—convener of the League of Northern Democrats and former aide to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo—is expected to serve as a broad-based platform aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and ultimately dislodging President Bola Tinubu from power.

The letter of application was jointly signed by Chief Akin A. Rickets, the association’s Protem National Chairman, and Abdullahi Elayo, its Protem National Secretary.

“We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party,” the letter stated.

“This is pursuant to the resolution of the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full political registration. The name of the party shall be All Democratic Alliance (ADA), and our slogan is ‘Justice for All’.”

The coalition also submitted all required documentation including the party’s constitution, manifesto, logo, and minutes from foundational meetings, as mandated by electoral regulations.

The proposed party’s symbol—a maize (corn) icon—was described by the group as a symbol of abundance, resilience, and sustenance, representing the core values the party aims to promote.

“We have also included our manifesto, which outlines our political ideology, and our constitution, which sets out the legal and organizational framework of the party,” the letter added.

If granted registration, the All Democratic Alliance could emerge as a serious contender in Nigeria’s next electoral cycle, signaling the start of a potentially transformative shift in the country’s political direction.
