The recent announcement by Pastor William Kumuyi, General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, on changes to the church’s long-standing marriage rules has continued to stir reactions among members and youths.

Speaking at the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference on Sunday, August 31, Pastor Kumuyi revealed that the church had lifted its six-month courtship rule and the ban on courtship visits. He clarified that ladies can now visit their intended partners during courtship, provided they are accompanied by an elder.

This announcement immediately sparked debates across social media and within the church community.

Deeper Life Member Speaks Out

In a lengthy Facebook post, Sunday Anani, a Deeper Life member, cautioned singles against blaming the church’s marriage committee for their struggles.

He wrote:

“Those singles posting about the Marriage Committee should realize that it is the least of their worries. Some singles don’t even have clarity about what they want. Your future marriage needs your intentionality more than the energy you invest in blaming others.”

Anani stressed that the marriage committee is not the problem and urged singles to focus on personal growth and preparation rather than external factors.

“I just laugh when young people in the church believe the marriage committee is their major problem. After the wedding day, the committee has no further business with your marriage.”

Mixed Reactions From Members

Other members also shared their perspectives:

Taiwo Olubukunmi Awodiran said, “I never regret passing through the marriage committee. If anyone regrets it, the foundation of that marriage must have been faulty.”

Esther Ewan expressed concern, urging youths not to get carried away: “May the devil not get us overexcited and distracted from the real issues we should pray and work on personally.”

Chukwuma Emeka called for reflection: “This is a wake-up call to take responsibility for our marriages instead of pointing fingers.”

Kumuyi’s Warning to Marriage Committee

Meanwhile, Pastor Kumuyi has also cautioned the marriage committee against becoming too rigid, warning that strict practices risk driving young people away from the church.

He clarified that the committee is a guidance platform, not a biblical institution, and should never exercise undue authority over members.

The latest modification is being hailed by many youths as a refreshing step forward in the church’s approach to marriage, even as debates continue within the congregation.
