Temi Otedola’s decision to drop her billionaire father, Femi Otedola’s surname after marrying singer Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has sparked mixed reactions online.
Shortly after sharing photos from her white wedding with Mr Eazi, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Temi had updated her Instagram bio to reflect her new name, Temi Ajibade, officially replacing her maiden name with her husband’s surname.
Backlash Over Temi’s New Surname
While many congratulated the couple, others were quick to criticize the move. A Nigerian lady, in a now-viral video, openly questioned Temi’s decision.
She asked why Temi would change a surname as powerful and influential as Otedola simply because she got married.
According to the lady, Mr Eazi himself married Temi because of her father’s name and legacy. She further argued that, if anything, Mr Eazi should have been the one to change his surname, given how powerful the Otedola name is.
“How can you change a surname as powerful as Otedola because of marriage? They came to you because of the name, now you’re changing it. Men are marrying you for what you have, for power, and what you bring to the table. Who knows Ajibade? Must you change your surname?” she said.
Reactions From Nigerians
The video triggered heated debates across social media. Here are some of the reactions gathered:
redchampagnebox: “An average Nigerian woman sees marriage as an escape from poverty, which is why 98% don’t marry men they love but men who are ready and can provide. It’s always love for hire.”
lex_consults: “Na rich woman change name, na poor woman dey cry.”
neehyeehwah: “Can these girls shut up, please? If it’s your turn, get married and keep your father’s name.”
ProphetsSpeak_: “If your value is tied to your father’s name, you were never standing, you were leaning. Temi became Ajibade not because she lost power, but because she understood covenant.”
MezieAbia: “Why make it seem wrong for Otedola’s daughter to adopt her husband’s name? Marriage is a union, not a competition of surnames.”
Social Media Comparisons
Meanwhile, Temi and Mr Eazi’s wedding has also been compared to Davido and Chioma’s Chivido wedding.
Actor Uche Maduagwu joined the debate, claiming Davido did not receive financial help from his in-laws, unlike Mr Eazi. He also alleged that the Unavailable crooner turned down financial assistance from his own billionaire father, Deji Adeleke.
