Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has cautioned that Nigeria’s security challenges have not been fully resolved.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television, Bishop Kukah acknowledged recent improvements in the fight against insurgency and banditry but warned against declaring the nation’s insecurity crisis over.

His comments came in response to President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, in which the president suggested that the threat of insecurity in the country was largely under control.

Bishop Kukah said, “Nobody can say the threat is over. We have entered a lull, and significant progress has been made. There is a substantial reduction in violence, but insecurity is far from gone.

“Only yesterday, a young Fulani boy, still held by kidnappers, told me he had to climb a tree just to call me. We should appreciate the improvements, but there is still a lot of work to do.”

The clergyman emphasized that Nigeria’s insecurity is more than just gun violence and kidnappings; it stems from deeper structural and societal issues that require long-term solutions.

He concluded by urging authorities and citizens alike to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the root causes of insecurity, stressing that sustained effort is needed to achieve lasting peace.
