The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced the suspension of routine updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, citing the ongoing partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, the Embassy attributed the move to a “lapse in appropriations” — a diplomatic phrase for the funding impasse that has crippled federal operations in Washington after Congress failed to pass a budget or stopgap bill.
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the Embassy said.
Consular Services Remain Operational
Despite the communication freeze, the Embassy reassured Nigerians that passport and visa services will continue as scheduled. It noted that consular services in Nigeria and other U.S. embassies worldwide remain unaffected “as the situation permits.”
This assurance means that Nigerians with visa appointments can proceed as planned, although possible delays could arise if the shutdown drags on.
Part of a Global Embassy Policy
The suspension of social media updates is not unique to Nigeria. Other U.S. embassies, including in the United Kingdom, have posted similar notices, emphasizing that only urgent safety and security updates will be published until government operations resume fully.
Political Stalemate in Washington
The shutdown began after President Donald Trump and lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on federal spending, with Democrats demanding more funding for healthcare. The stalemate has forced several U.S. government departments and agencies to suspend operations, affecting hundreds of thousands of workers and millions of Americans who depend on public services.
The current closure is the first under Trump’s administration since his previous record-setting 35-day shutdown. Analysts warn that the prolonged impasse could have wider impacts on global diplomatic and consular operations.
Recent Visa Advisory
Earlier, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria had issued a travel advisory reminding Nigerians about the proper use of the B1/B2 visa, warning that misuse could lead to permanent visa ineligibility.
