Peter Obi Slams Federal Government Over Demolition: “You’re Wiping Away People’s Hard Work Overnight”
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the Federal Government over the demolition of citizens’ properties without due process or adequate notice.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi described the demolitions as “willful, inhumane, and economically devastating,” condemning the government’s disregard for citizens’ welfare at a time of widespread hardship.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the ongoing demolitions are destroying livelihoods, crippling small businesses, and deepening poverty across the country.
“I wish to reiterate my strong condemnation of the willful destruction of people’s property and goods by government authorities at any level without notice,” Obi stated.
“An administration whose policies have already plunged millions into poverty in less than 29 months should be showing compassion, not inflicting further hardship.”
Obi questioned the legality and morality of the actions, noting that the demolished properties were not linked to any criminal activity.
“What legal authority justifies the destruction of private property, clearly not used for criminal purposes, without prior notice or due process? Are these actions truly in the public interest, or are they arbitrary exercises of power?” he asked.
He urged both federal and state governments to ensure that urban development initiatives are carried out in line with the rule of law and with respect for citizens’ rights and dignity.
“Citizens deserve protection for their investments, livelihoods, and dignity,” he added.
“These acts of demolition send a chilling message to entrepreneurs across the country and beyond — that their hard work and sacrifices can be wiped away overnight.”
The LP flag bearer warned that the continued disregard for citizens’ welfare could weaken Nigeria’s economic stability and erode public trust.
“If we fail to stand against such injustices, we risk undermining the very foundations of economic growth and social stability. Every citizen has the right to build a life through honest work — that right must never be trampled upon,” Obi concluded.
