Human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara has praised the people of the Southeast for standing by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and rejecting claims that he is a criminal or a terrorist.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment after convicting him on all seven terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday, Opara maintained that the IPOB leader is neither a terrorist nor the criminal he is portrayed to be.
According to him, Nnamdi Kanu has endured “the highest level of injustice” anywhere in the world.
He said:
“The people of the Southeast know that Nnamdi Kanu is not a criminal and not a terrorist. I want to commend them for standing firm.
“I call on all well-meaning Nigerians to join hands and intervene so that the Court of Appeal can set aside this judgment.”
Opara further revealed that Kanu’s case was raised internationally on the same day the judgment was delivered.
“As of yesterday, while our delegates were meeting with the U.S. Congress in America, one of the congressmen brought up this issue and highlighted the level of injustice Nnamdi Kanu has suffered in Nigeria—as if he were their own citizen,” he said.
He added that the Federal Government’s actions against Kanu escalated without provocation.
“He was in his house, minding his business. The Federal Government, which is now prosecuting him, went to his home unprovoked and killed 38 people,” Opara claimed.
