Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has stated that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not a precondition for the South-East geopolitical zone to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Speaking to journalists on Friday night in Lagos, Umahi dismissed reports suggesting that the South-East had attached Kanu’s release as a bargaining chip for political backing.
“Someone asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I clearly stated that his release is not a condition for the South-East to support the President. While we are open to negotiating his release, no one should politicize the issue. President Tinubu did not incarcerate him,” Umahi explained.
The minister praised President Tinubu as a responsive and reform-driven leader, expressing optimism that any resolution regarding Kanu would come through dialogue and divine intervention rather than political coercion.
“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is making significant progress. He took over the economy at a difficult time, and his bold reforms have restored international confidence in Nigeria. This is why our projects are receiving global support,” Umahi added.
He highlighted key infrastructure initiatives underway in the South-East under Tinubu’s administration, including the rehabilitation of previously neglected roads, noting that the region is already benefiting from the President’s commitment.
Umahi also debunked claims that the South-East is being marginalized in federal appointments, asserting that Tinubu has done more for the region than many of his predecessors.
He called for unity among political leaders, regardless of party affiliation, and commended South-East governors — including those in opposition parties — for collaborating effectively with the President.
On the 2027 elections, Umahi reaffirmed his loyalty to Tinubu, stating unequivocally that he has no presidential ambitions.
“I’m not contesting. I will work for my boss, President Tinubu. The APC remains the vehicle through which we can achieve the goals of our region. Today, the South-East has a voice at the centre — and we will not return to the past,” he declared.
